Am I Still Grieving?

Sometimes grief and growth happen at the same time.
There was a season in my own life when I was grieving, and I didn’t even realize I was grieving.
I thought I was stuck.
I thought I just needed to move on, get myself together, and figure out what was next.
But looking back, I can see that something deeper was happening within me.
While I was grieving what had changed, I was also becoming.
My perspective was shifting.
My identity was being rebuilt.
Things I once thought defined me were being challenged.
And God was doing a work in me that I couldn’t fully see at the time.
Maybe You’re Not Stuck
Have you ever found yourself asking:
“Why can’t I move forward?”
Maybe you’ve tried to convince yourself that you should be further along by now.
Maybe you’ve started comparing your journey to someone else’s.
Maybe you’ve wondered why something that happened months—or even years—ago still seems to affect you.
Before you label yourself as stuck, pause.
What if you’re still grieving?
Grief isn’t only about losing a person.
We can grieve a relationship.
A dream.
A career.
A version of ourselves.
A season of life.
Something we thought would happen but didn’t.
Or even the person we thought we were supposed to become.
And sometimes we don’t recognize grief because we’re still functioning.
We’re showing up.
We’re taking care of everyone else.
We’re smiling.
We’re moving through life.
But underneath it all, something is still being carried.
What Are You Still Carrying?
This is where the coaching moment begins.
Ask yourself honestly:
What am I still grieving?
What have I lost that I haven’t given myself permission to acknowledge?
What version of myself am I having a hard time letting go of?
And then ask:
What might God be growing within me in this season?
Because the truth is, grieving doesn’t mean you’re going backward.
Sometimes grieving is part of moving forward.
You can mourn what was while making room for what is becoming.
You can acknowledge the loss without allowing the loss to define your future.
And you can honor who you were without staying there.
Grieving AND Growing
Maybe the answer isn’t either/or.
Maybe you’re grieving and growing.
Maybe you’re releasing while you’re rebuilding.
Maybe you’re healing while you’re becoming.
Maybe what feels like a season of uncertainty is actually a season of transformation.
I know that was true for me.
I couldn’t see everything God was doing while I was in it.
But now I can look back and recognize that something was happening within me long before I could see what I was becoming.
So today, don’t rush yourself.
Pause.
Be honest.
Give yourself permission to acknowledge what you’re carrying.
And then ask yourself:
Am I still grieving?
Am I growing?
Or could I be doing both?
You may not be stuck.
You may be in the middle of becoming.
